Addressing your invitations

As soon as the master guest list has been prepared, do a spelling check on the list. An addressed invitation should be handwritten and not typed. For large weddings, the maid of honor and bridesmaids can assist in addressing.

THE INNER ENVELOPE

First names are not included in the inner unsealed envelope. Writing "and Family" is always unacceptable. Invitations must also be handed out to individuals over 16 years of age. Relatives, friends and other guests must be handed out an invitation.

MAILING AND PACKAGING

Invitations must be folded either in half or quarters to the purchased type and tissue must be placed against the print to prevent smudging of words. Enclosures like response cards and maps must be placed in the fold in the invitation. The invitation should be placed in an envelope that doesn’t have been assembled or put together. Get the envelope without seal and place it in the envelope with the address upturned making sure that the names face the back of the addressed envelope. Postage as well as the return address should be included in the response card.

WORDING THE INVITATIONS

The wedding invitations are usually issued by the bride's parents. In case of deceased parents, issuing of the invitation is done by the nearest relative. When parents are divorced, the person who reared usually issues the invitation. The rule is the name of the sponsoring person is placed on top of the wedding invitation.

Names are spelled out in full, no nicknames are allowed. By tradition, the name of the bride is not printed unless different from her parents. Once everything is clear, ask the printer to produce a copy of the complete invitation and proofread it. When doing online purchase, a proof copy should be mailed or faxed. Courtesy is exercised if the invitations are sent a couple of months prior to the wedding.

When the ceremony and reception are being held at the same venue and when similar guests are invited for both, "Reception immediately follows at the same venue" should be added. When in different locations and all the guests are invited, the couple can either mail the invitation with the information of the ceremony and a venue of the reception on the bottom left corner or a ceremony invitation card and a copy separate from the invitation. For a chosen few, a reception invitation with all the information needed should be mailed.
